Palm Tungsten W

Palm Tungsten W Overview

Palm Tungsten W

There are three different Palm Tungsten models. The Tungsten T, Tungsten C, and Tungsten W. This review is for the Palm Tungsten W. The Tungsten T and Tungsten C are addressed in separate reviews.

The Palm Tungsten W is Palm's foray into the world of PDA/phone combos. As a PDA, it's adequate but not exceptional. It comes with 16 MB of memory and an expansion slot. It also comes with a decent software package.

The Tungsten W can be used for email and surfing the web as long as you have a service plan. The phone, however, falls a bit short. For some reason, Palm didn't build a speaker or a microphone into the Tungsten W, so this function can only be used with a wireless headset.

On the upside, the Tungsten W does have a built-in mini keyboard. This will help some people in using the email. However, there is no graffiti area, since the Tungsten W uses Graffiti 2, which allows you write anywhere on the screen.

Palm Tungsten W Ratings

Unlike the other two Tungsten models, the Tungsten W has received less than stellar reviews. It hasn't gotten bad reviews, but worse than its cousins. Because the Tungsten W is not directed at the typical PDA user, there are fewer user ratings. Of 69 votes on one web site, only 61% recommended the Palm Tungsten W. That's much less than the other two Tungsten models.

Professional Ratings: 7.4 out of 10 (3 reviews)

User Ratings: 6.3 out of 10 (14 reviews)

Although these ratings are somewhat lower than many Palm OS models, the price of the Tungsten W is not. One of the chief complaints about the Tungsten W is that the phone is only available with AT&T service plans. Furthermore, some customers have exprienced poor customer support for the Tungsten W from both Palm and AT&T. And lastly, because the Tungsten W has no speaker or microphone, the phone can only be used with a wireless headset.
